Sir Eric Gairy led the fight for the independance of the island of Grenada. Yet, the economic situation deteriorated, corruption and real-estate speculators were leading the country to bankruptcy. On 13 March 1979, a handful of militants from “New Jewel” organised a coup. Gairy fled overseas.
